References, Resources and Archives

The Atlanta Public Museum is a treasure trove of photography, public records, historical information and memorabilia, not just on the town's history, but the county and state happenings also. People can conduct their own research in our Reference, Resources and Archive room or they can contact the Museum with their request at atlantamuseum@yahoo.com

Two online resources that are available are the local paper, the Atlanta Argus and yearbooks dating back to the beginning of the local high school. Click on the links below to begin your search.

The Museum also conducts Research Projects to expand the knowledge and history of our collections. The current project underway involves the 2200+ Indian Artifacts that were donated by Joe Mountjoy and are on loan from the Joe Pech family.

Thought to have been from the Kickapoo Indian Tribe that had several encampments alongside the Kickapoo Crick just south of Atlanta, it turns out they are in fact not from this tribe or that time era, 1750's - early 1800's. They are in fact from 6,000 to 10,000 BC.

The Museum is working with the IL State Archaeological Society to identify each arrowhead, or point, by the time period, raw material, heat treatment(s), tool type and size measurements.

Once each point is identified, we hope to create a catalog for scholars, students, and the general public to use to learn more about these amazing treasures we have been gifted.
